    ABOUT

    Art Statement

I am a self-taught artist with international roots. My art is inspired by my spiritual journey which is a significant aspect of my identity. My work is expressive, tuned to the aesthetic, steeped in color, abstract, raw, mysterious, and intuitive. Each body has a strength. Through the creative process, the unique inner being of my subjects is released into a collective strength that becomes the painting. I want the message of love, healing, and transformation in my work to be experienced by the world in the way - I experience it within my heart.

    About Gabriela.

Gabriela Alvarez grew up in the mountains of Ecuador surrounded by rivers and trees. At a very young age she expressed the desire to paint through found materials, crayons and paper. She attended studies in an ancient cathedral (1700's) where she learned the craft of an unofficial Restoration Conservator. This collective of restoration peers opened the door to the entire creative process, exploration of materials, and the art scene in the Quito, The Capital City of Ecuador. Over time, Twenty year old Gabriela, was affected by the highly caustic chemicals and thinners used within restoration resulting in a fork in the road which changed the trajectory of Gabriela's life. She searched for a career to engage in a responsible stable life which was not her authentic self. During this time, she found the strength to pursue her passion for expression and art. She was accepted into the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Ecuador. For Sixteen months, Gabriela largely focused on conceptual art, with introductions to art history, ceramics and painting. She met her future husband, they lived a year in Spain, married and emigrated to the United States (2003). As a mother, Gabriela turned to her spirituality as a form of creativity.

    The Journey.

While steeped in her own online development, Gabriela, discovered the motivation and substantial commitment to develop her identity and foundational skills as an artist. She officially began studies within Milan Art Instutite's Art Mastery Program, where she gained confidence in studio methods and the material practice of oils, acrylic, mixed media, and drawing. Gabriela experienced a significant personal narrative rising up in her work through both the spiritual and creative expression coming together through her artist voice. Gabriela's canvases begin long before paint and brush find their way to the surface. Her inspiration is deep in the spiritual, the essence of animals and the inner power of women, ancient yet recognizable symbols and the natural world.

    The Artist

Gabriela paints using warm and cool in a way that creates an argument, and then through her process of painting discovers both the intimacy and spirituality of her content creating a dialog which is that of the peacemaker.  The viewer is so engage in it all happening at once that there is a world that has never existed before that has everything  in it that should not work but everything works so beautifully.
